Session 5 - Library Careers

This week we will discuss the vast range of library careers that are available to you.

Class Activity 1

On the whiteboard, write down where you would like to be employed. Do you want to work in public libraries? School libraries? Special libraries? other GLAM industries? Records management?

Class Activity 2

Also on the whiteboard, write down your dream job within the library or other GLAM industries.

Class Activity 3

What do you think are the main skills and knowledge that you will need to work in a library?

Where can you look for jobs?

One of your portfolio items is to research and find jobs within the library sector. Here are a few websites that you could use to find a library job:

Victorian Government https://jobs.careers.vic.gov.au/

Class Activity 4

What sorts of jobs do you think you will find on some of these sites?

You can also look on individual library corporation or local government job sites

Many of these sites allow you to save your searches and have regular emails sent to you with potential jobs that match your criteria.

Class Activity 5

Can you think of any other places that you can search for library-related jobs? Share with the class or pop it in the Zoom chat.

Portfolio

You should now be able to work on PF8 and PF9 of your portfolio.

I will go through the portfolio requirements again to make sure that everyone is clear on the requirements.
